Caribbean's
only Coral Atoll.
Over 50 coral islands, and numerous low reefs and sand flats,
are thrown like a necklace around a central lagoon. Each has
powder-soft, white sand beaches, set in shallow emerald and
turquoise waters. The only activities are swimming, snorkeling,
scuba diving, Kite and windsurfing, and sailing, or just lazing
in the sun.
The days are sunny and hot all year round and the nights are
cool. There is an almost total absence of both rain, insects,
hurricanes and crime.
According to
The Observer (UK), Los Roques archipelago is one of the
twenty most beautiful island destinations in the world, among
Mnemba Island in Zanzibar, Roatan in Honduras, Petit St Vincent
in the Caribbean, North Island in Seychelles, Panarea in Italy,
Samothraki in Greece, among others.

Seeing Stars

Walking
the soft white beaches of Los Roques, it is rare to see another
human being. There are empty conch shells, coral sculptures,
scuttling hermit crabs, shiny lizards and long-legged
sandpipers. A Heron watches while a fluffy white chick sits in
its nest amid the green Sea Purslane. When I took to the warm
turquoise waters, jumping jacks flopped in the shallows; frigate
birds with sharply angled wings floated above; curious terns
looked me in the eye; and pelicans dive-bombed for breakfast.
Below the surface, designer fish played hide and seek in the
corals: angelfish, Butterflyfish, parrotfish, Blueheads,
Snappers, Baby Damsels and a fleeing turtle, to mention but a
few.
